Going from startup to scale-up is like going through adolescence - you know it’s essential for the next stage, but it can often be awkward and sometimes even embarrassing. You’re growing fast and your old clothes (messaging) don’t fit anymore and you’re developing your own character (positioning). Teens often fall for the allure of trying to be accepted (using the “cool” buzzwords etc.), when just being authentic is really what’ll help them figure out how to fit into the world.
During this time, you’re making new friends (hiring a lot) and dazzled by the wiser folks in your circles (new leadership), while your coach (VCs) gives you the tips (funding) to be more successful.
All of these influences, however well-intentioned, will impact your image and if you don’t cement your value and the way you’re perceived to the outside world, your inner circle, peers (partners) and influencers (customers and analysts) will create an image of you that’s potentially awkward, or in the worst case scenario: unnoticed or irrelevant.
